Art at Jubilee
Subject leader: Mia Coker
The arts make a powerful contribution to a child’s health and wellbeing. Through creative arts including; painting and drawing, music, drama, dance, sculpting and clay modelling, we unlock children's talents by building resilience, developing confidence and encouraging communication skills.
We endeavour to incorporate art throughout our curriculum, providing children with exciting activities which provide high levels of engagement. Our use of the IPC ensures that all of our artwork is embedded within topic based learning. Children also have the opportunity to take part in Confident Creators funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, which encourages children to reach their full artistic potential.
In line with the National Curriculum, children will also be studying local British artists who tie in with their current areas of study. Exciting trips to London Galleries and workshops with skilled artists are also planned into the curriculum.
In the EYFS, engaging and imaginative experiences are planned for our children. They are provided with opportunities to combine materials, mix colours, develop their fine and gross motor skills through cutting, collaging and painting. They also explore textures through different materials and mediums. At Jubilee our children are introduced to a wide range of music and instruments. All children are encouraged to express themselves by using their skills and experiences and exploring new concepts such as; drawing and painting to music and making representations and engaging in active creative experiences.
By the end of Key Stage 1, Jubilee pupils will be confident in a range of skills such as
- Using a range of materials creatively to design and make products
- Drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
- Developing a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
- Learning about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work
Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
By the end of Key Stage 2 Pupils will be confident
- to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
- to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay].
- about great artists, architects and designers in history.
Our children are also given many other opportunities to showcase their talents by winning art competitions such as the Urban Arts fair, exhibiting art work in local galleries and public spaces and recording and editing their own podcast. At Jubilee, we take pride in our learning environment and high quality art work is a constant feature of the wonderful displays in all of our corridors, teaching spaces and classrooms. Each year our departing Year 6 pupils produce a memorable legacy project; painting murals, screen printing or sculpting a lasting piece of art for the whole school to enjoy.
