Science at Jubilee

Subject Leader: Kelly Stoppard

At Jubilee, Science is a core subject:
The aim of primary Science is to stimulate pupils’ curiosity in the world around them and encourage critical and creative thinking and to create a foundation for Science at secondary school.

We follow the National Curriculum to ensure the children get a full coverage of scientific learning. If you would like to see the objectives and the different areas your children are covering throughout the year follow this link: https://www.ase.org.uk/plan

The aims at Jubilee are:

  • For children to develop their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • To develop an understanding of the processes and methods of science through different types of scientific enquiries that help - them to answer questions about the world around them
  • To be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

We teach science on a weekly basis and the children take part in practical experiments as well as writing evaluations of their findings. We try to link our science lessons with our topic lessons as much as possible so the children can be immersed in their learning in a variety of contexts.

Science lessons are a fantastic way of encouraging and promoting childrens’ curiosity of the natural world. We are very lucky to have our award winning garden and other nature filled areas so our children can not only explore what they learn in science but also discover things for themselves.

Our wonderful garden is just one of many ways the children are able to apply their scientific knowledge and skills outside of the classroom. Throughout the year, many opportunities are offered to the children at Jubilee. Robogals is a workshop based at The Imperial College of London. It offers our girls a chance to experience robotics and programming and is a great way to encourage more girls to get involved in STEM groups and careers. We also celebrate British Science Week where we dedicate the entire week to scientific discovery, with real life application activities such as forensic workshops and cosmetic chemistry! We also take part in the Science Explosion event that is held at Richard Atkins Primary School as part of the Windmill Cluster where the children have the chance to partake in various experiments that are relevant to them. Jubilee is also partnered with St Martin in-the-Field High School for Girls  which allows the children in KS2 to experience secondary level science lessons and investigations that link to their current science topic.

"Real science can be far stranger than science fiction and much more satisfying."
