What is the PE & Sports Premium?

In March 2013 the government announced that it was to provide additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2014 - 2020 to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools in England.

This funding allocated to primary school head teachers and can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. OFSTED will play a significant role in ensuring that schools target this funding in areas which will lead to clear outcomes in raising standards and opportunities in PE and school sport for all children throughout the Primary Phase (from DfE Website).

Eligible Schools

Funding for schools will be calculated by reference to the number of primary-aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11), as recorded in the annual schools census in January 2015.

Purpose of funding

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
  • pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools

Vision

At Jubilee Primary School, we aim to have all pupils leaving primary school with the habit of playing and enjoying sports, the skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle, confidence and discipline.

Cumulative spend £16,168.35
Sports Premium Funding Received £15,311

In addition to this we spent £18,259 on sports coach led PE sessions. Whilst outside of the designated costings because it is within curriculum time teachers strongly benefited from this in terms of their subject knowledge as they had the opportunity to observe sessions, utilise high quality lesson plans and work schemes and gain advice from coaches in school about how best to approach their upcoming sessions.
