Reading at Jubilee
We believe that reading is not only a key skill for academic achievement and success in the working world but one of life’s great pleasures, and we aim to foster a lifelong love of reading in our pupils.
Early Reading
Children in EYFS and Year 1 develop their early reading fluency through the Little Wandle phonics programme - a synthetic and systematic approach to teaching early reading, spelling and writing. Find out more here.
Developing fluency
From Year 2, children follow a colour-banded scheme reading scheme through Pearson Bug Club. This comprises books and e-books designed to develop reading fluency.
The children read 1:1 with an adult in school at least twice per week and are encouraged to read daily at home. In addition to accessing Bug Club e-books of their reading band weekly in school, they are able to access the site from home on any device or attend our after school reading club. Teachers maintain a dialogue with parents and carers about each child’s reading progress via their reading record book.
Children who require additional support with fluency participate in the ‘Rapid Reading’ intervention, as well as targeted interventions using Little Wandle resources. Identified children in KS1 are assigned a ‘Reading Buddy’ - a child from KS2 who acts as a reading role model. They read together weekly in the school library.
Once fully fluent readers, children are able to select from a wide range of appropriately challenging non-banded texts.
Reading comprehension
Early comprehension skills are taught in EYFS to Y1 through the Little Wandle programme, class story time and individual reading sessions.
From Year 2 to Year 6 reading comprehension is taught explicitly through our tailored ‘Reading Masters’ programme. Find out more here.
Reading for pleasure
We’re dedicated to fostering a life-long love of learning in each of our children, so we provide them with regular opportunities to access a wide range of texts.
We’re proud of our new school library which provides a space for children to relax and enjoy a huge range of books, and to use as a learning resource. Each class visits the library fortnightly, when the children are able to borrow a book of their choice.
Our ‘Junior Librarians’ from KS2 take care of the library and help make it appealing and exciting for their peers. All of the children take ownership of the space by creating their own books for our ‘Jubilee Authors’ shelf.
We are looking forward to re-launching our family reading clubs in the school library when restrictions allow, to provide opportunities for parents and carers to enjoy reading new books with their children in a relaxed setting.
We have a close relationship with Brixton Library. Each class visits once each half term, when they listen to a story and are able to take home one fiction and one non-fiction book.
