Writing at Jubilee

Our writing curriculum is centred around the exploration of high-quality texts and the development of key skills.

Each class explores a core text each half term, which is chosen to be reflective of our diverse and inclusive community and enable cross-curricular links to be made.

Teachers create writing tasks to enable the teaching of spelling, grammar and punctuation skills, using the class text as a stimulus.

Children are taught to write a variety of text types including narratives, non-chronological reports, letters, and recounts requiring different structural elements. Before writing, they explore the text type, its purpose, audience and features, and participate in a range of stimulus activities. These include drama, group work, debate and real-life scenarios.

Writing fluency

We want to enable our children to have good written fluency, so that they can focus on the content, cohesion and presentation of their writing, and their own writer’s voice. That’s why we use the Letter-join handwriting scheme from Y2-Y6.

Letter-join is a systematic scheme designed to teach handwriting to each year group through a range of paper and interactive resources. Beginning with letter formation and orientation, it progresses to teach cursive writing and support children in developing a personal handwriting style. Children are able to access Letter-join resources at home to support their learning.

Early writing fluency is taught in EYFS and Y1 through the Little Wandle scheme. Letter-join resources are used to support learning interventions at this stage.

You can find the writing objectives for your child’s year group below.
